Grishino Ecological Village

Russian ecovillage Grishino

We live in Ecovillage Grishino, located in the North-West region of Russia in a historical village called Grishino (about 300 km north-east from St. Petersburg). Our ecovillage is located at the confluence of two rivers – the Vazhinka and the Muzhala. Here we have been living and building our community since 1993.

We came here from many different places, mostly from cities. We live close to the earth and try to create harmonious relations between each other and with Nature. Each one of us has different world conceptions, but we are learning to understand each other and to create our community together.

We live in Grishino all year round. There are several traditional, Russian-style, common and private houses. We eat vegetables grown in our own gardens. We pick wild herbs and make tea, especially Rose-Bay tea.

Our ecovillage is surrounded by forest, where we pick berries and mushrooms for food. Also there are wild birds and animals, such as beaver, moose, bear, hare, fox, wolves, mountain lion, and many others.

Today our forest is in danger because of logging done by industrial forest companies. To prevent forest devastation we are starting different projects, including: a tree-planting camp, designing arboretum, and developing eco-friendly forest management in our region.

We intend to revive the traditions of our ancestors – the folk culture and art. We learn songs and dances, woodcraft, ceramics, and village architecture. Our dream is to create a family school for our children. Each summer we host different types of seminars related to spiritual life, handicrafts, etc. Work and spiritual practices in our community are the best ways to merge with the Spirit of Nature.

We are developing an ecological tourism project here in Grishino. We are inviting families and individuals to visit us and spend time in the wild and beautiful nature of the North. You are always welcome to Grishino!
